In the wintertime, it is important to take a few extra steps in car maintenance procedures to make sure your car is running its best. Cold weather can cause a bunch of troubles for cars, so taking the time to check over parts that can be affected by cooler temperatures can make the difference between a trip to your car mechanic or smooth driving. Here are some tips for you to use to keep your car maintained during the colder season.
Your Tires
One part of your car that should be checked weekly would be your tires. Make sure you have the proper inflation inside all four of your tires in order to keep your car running without mishap. In cooler weather, the air in your tires will need to be filled more frequently than in the summer when air expands due to the heat. Having under inflated tires can cause you difficulty in inclement weather.
Check the tread on your tires to make sure there is enough to grip the road. If your tires look as if they are starting to wear, get them replaced, as slick road conditions and balding tires do not mix.
Your Battery
You should make sure you have a fully-charged battery before cold weather sets in. Batteries on the cusp of needing replacement due to age should be checked and replaced if necessary. Cold weather causes weak batteries to have more difficulty starting. Always keep jumper cables in your vehicle in case this happens to you.
Windshield Wipers
Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly so you do not get caught in a snowstorm without adequate visibility. Wipers that are wearing or that do not remove all liquid from your windshield should be replaced.
You will also want to make sure you have windshield washer fluid in your reservoir at all times in the wintertime. You may go through a lot of fluid when roadways have salt treatments on them that get kicked up to your windshield when you drive. Check your fluid weekly to make sure you do not get caught on the road without a way to remove debris.
Gas Tank
It is important to keep your gas tank at least halfway full in the wintertime. When temperatures drop very low, moisture can form inside your gas lines. If this were to freeze, you would not be able to start your car.
